Key2Enable, Key-X Keyboard

What is Key-X Keyboard?

The Key-X keyboard is designed to support individuals with motor or physical limitations in accessing and controlling a computer. It has a simplified layout with eleven large, dome-shaped keys that are spaced widely apart. This design helps users with limited dexterity or hand tremors press keys more accurately and comfortably.

The Key-X allows users to input all standard keyboard characters through key combinations using the eleven keys. The keys are touch-sensitive, requiring a gentle press to activate, but it is durable enough to withstand stronger input too. In addition to typing, the keyboard can switch modes to function as a mouse, offering an alternative method of computer navigation. It has colour and symbol coding on the keys to help users learn and remember the combinations needed for typing or mouse control. Included is the SimpliX software, which can be used to create interactive educational activities and communication boards. The Key-X costs €1,600.

Overall Thoughts

Finding the right balance between innovation and affordability is often a challenge with assistive technology. The Key-X keyboard presents this challenge. The innovation and thought that went into its design do come at a cost. One cannot ignore that affordability is important for individuals, families, schools and service providers working with tight budgets. However, this keyboard is unique. It was co-developed by a computer science graduate living with cerebral palsy, and technical expertise is evident in the design, which is unlike any other keyboard available. Matching the right assistive technology (AT) with a person can be life-changing. It ensures that the tool has the potential to truly support their individual needs, abilities, and goals, which you cannot place a price on.
